Different types of Anti-inflammatory Diets

The reason it is so tricky deciding what to eat on an anti-inflammatory diet is that there are several versions of it…..

Vegan version: no animal products at all, which can also include honey. In addition vegans also need to avoid substitute meat products as these can increase inflammation, as does glutinous wheat, spelt, kamut, barley and other grains. Soy products also need to be reduced/ removed due to their inflammatory effect.

Mediterranean version, includes some fish and chicken, lots of vegetables, fruit, beans, nuts, seeds and olive oil. Reduce the grains and avoid the red wine though, as it aggravates inflammatory conditions.

Paleo version, includes red meat, eggs, fish and chicken as well as more nuts and seeds. As meat is inflammatory, with this diet the volume of meat needs to be reduced from normal Paleo diets and some vegetarian meals should be included. It is also worth noting that the meat consumed should be from a bio, grass fed source which has much higher anti- inflammatory Omega 3 fatty acids.

General non-specific, this includes a whole range of foods, focusing on anti- inflammatory properties, but is non-specific

All of these diets have differences but they share the fact they aid the problem of inflammation in our bodies. They all have shared guidelines which are really good things to remember:

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables

Eat healthy fats

Make sure you have the right balance of Omega 6 to Omega 3

Eat enough protein

Look after your gut

Avoid refined sugar

Avoid processed foods

Drink plenty of water…8 glasses a day

Aim to keep your stress levels as low as you can

Get as much sleep as possible

Avoid any foods you have an intolerance with including checking with dairy products, nightshade vegetables and eggs in case they have an adverse effect on you.
